KAREN SCHAEFER JOINS WKSU NEWS TEAM

Award-winning journalist Karen Schaefer has been added to the WKSU newsroom as reporter/producer. Schaefer previously held a similar position at 90.3 and WVIZ ideastream where she covered a variety of topics, most notably the environment. She has been honored for her reporting with more than 50 national, state and regional awards, including a regional Emmy (for work aired on WVIZ), three first-place Communicator Awards, a first-place National Headliner, a first-place award from the National Association of Black Journalists, a first-place Silver Microphone award and a first-place PRNDI award from Public Radio News Directors, Inc.

Schaefer's reports have also been heard on National Public Radio (NPR), the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), Pacifica, the Voice of America, and Radio Zagreb. She has trained with radio documentarian Davia Nelson of the Kitchen Sisters, former CBC producer David Candow (known in public radio circles as the "host whisperer"), and Margo Melnicove, senior producer of BBC's "The World."

Originally from Colorado, Schaefer lives in Oberlin with her husband, chef/musician Jeff Slocum.

WKSU broadcasts NPR & Classical Music at 89.7 FM, and is a service of Kent State University. WKSU programming is also heard on WKRW 89.3 FM in Wooster, WKRJ 91.5 FM in Dover/New Philadelphia, WKSV 89.1 FM in Thompson, WNRK 90.7 in Norwalk, W298BA 107.5 FM in Boardman, and W239AZ 95.7 FM in Ashland.
