Government and Politics Thursday, June 21, 2007 A New Cleveland Convention Center Could Mean a Sales Tax Increase
by WKSU's KEVIN NIEDERMIER |
 Reporter Kevin Niedermier | |
If Cleveland is going to have a new convention center, Cuyahoga County needs to raise its sales tax to pay for it.
That's according to the County Commission, which wants to increase the sales tax by a quarter-percent, something it can do without voter approval. The Commissioners say the extra tax revenue is necessary to convince Chicago-based "Merchandise Mart Properties" to put a "Medical Mart" in Cleveland. Such a facility which would likely boost convention business, and make a new convention center more successful.
