Akron speed demon Art Arfons dead at 81

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

Two American daredevils have died in the few days. Evil Knievel passed away on Friday and Akron's own Art Arfons died yesterday (Monday). Arfons set the World Land Speed Record several times in the 1960's using a jet powered car he called "the Green monster." WKSU's Mark Urycki interviewed Arfons eight years ago when PBS was about to broadcast a POV documentary about the speed racer. Here is that 1999 story.

Listener Comments:

Art Arfons and his Green Monster is Northeast Ohio's LEGEND and a HERO to many. He has a more than deserving spot at the International Motorsports Hall of Fame at Talladega, AL. The days of the "innovators" of jet car racing are gone, but the Arfons legacy will live forever in history books and museums.

Well that is Two of the great daredevils that we have lost is a very short time..... Art and his jet cars are a great thing of the past. WE will never see the likes of the great jet cars again...
