Freedom House to Open New Shelter
Shelter to Assist Homeless Veterans
Monday, December 17, 2007

The biblical Christmas story will be played out in a modern setting this weekend as Portage County residents come together to raise money for a new shelter for homeless veterans. The Department of Veteran Affairs estimates at least 25 percent of America's homeless are military veterans. In fact, the VA says there are at least 300 thousand homeless veterans on America's streets on any given night. WKSU's Tom Parkinson visited a shelter dedicated to helping homeless vets get back on their feet.

Listener Comments:

Daer Friends at WKSU,
Thank you for the generous and helpful support of the new "Freedom House" on 1213 Anita Dr in beautiful Kent Ohio.
As a former residence of the house founded by Ms. Marie Miller on 213 So Willow St in Kent, I should wish to express my gratitude for all the assistance tendered by the staff and community, including Kent I Social Services on So Water St.
The counselors there aided me in obtain all available help, and kept on my case to run around town and appply for all available benefits. Thanks to them, I have an apartment in Ravenna, and furniture provided for free by the folks directly near County Clothing.
Please remind all students to upon departure, please telephone and donate any unwanted furniture, household goods or clothing to the local charitable organizations. This is by far preferable to filling a landfill with these items!
Sincerely yours,
A True Friend of Kent State University
