Widow of Superman co-creator, model for Lois Lane dies
Joanne Siegel was the model for Lois Lane and key to the copyright battles over the comic
Story by PHIL TORRES

The widow of Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel -- and the model for Lois Lane -- died today (Tuesday).

Joanne Siegel was 93.

She met Jerry Siegel and his partner Joe Shuster in 1938, when the two Cleveland teen-agers were creating their comic book Superman and needed a model for a love interest.  She and Siegel married 10 years later.
Brad Ricca teaches a class on comic books at Case Western Reserve University, and says Joanne Siegel was critical to the enduring popularity of the comic and to the copyright battle that ensued with DC comics.

Siegel and Shuster had sold their rights to the comic book to DC for $130. After decades of legal battles, DC Comics gave the two a lifelong stipend in 1978, and their families are to regain the copyright in two years. Other legal battles continue.
