A fire at a key supplier is temporarily shutting down production at General Motors’ Lordstown complex.

Flames and small chemical explosions ripped through the Magna International plant in Howell, Michigan, late Wednesday afternoon, destroying much of the plant. The Canadian automotive supplier makes door-panel interiors and other parts for GM, Ford and Nissan.

The Lordstown shutdown begins at 7 a.m. tomorrow (Friday).

Lordstown has been running three full shifts since early last fall when it ratcheted up production of the Chevrolet Cruze. Sales of The Cruze approached 19,000 last month, making it GM’s third highest-selling model.

GM spokesman Tom Mock acknowledges there will be some disruption.

Mock says Lordstown will make sure customers are taken care of.

Mock said whether the affected employees will receive unemployment will depend on their contracts and the length of the shutdown.

He says GM does not know at this point how long Lordstown will be down.
