The Summit County Board of Elections said it will continue to negotiate for more funding to pay for this year’s presidential election. County council on Monday approved a $4.7 million budget for the agency, about half the amount the board had requested.

The county argues that counties with a similar population spend millions less than that each year.

Joseph Masich, the director of the Summit County Board of Elections, said those counties spend less because of their electronic voting system, while Summit County still uses costly paper ballots.

“The next step is we’re going to negotiate with the county fairly soon and actually come up with a different number than 9.3 million. It will be less than 9.3 but it will be more than 4.7. At this point I can’t tell you what that will be.”

The Summit County Board of elections spent about $7 million in 2008. Masich said he expects higher voter turnout this year.
