U.S. Wednesday, June 6, 2012 Ohio native is first female four star general in Air Force General Wolfenbarger graduated with the first Air Force Academy class to allow women Story by EMILY MCCORD |

| The first female four star general has assumed command at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. For Ohio Public Radio Station WYSO, Emily McCord reports. |
General Janet Wolfenbarger is a native of Beaver Creek, Ohio. At a ceremony Tuesday, she took the reins of the Air Force Material Command. It’s responsible for the technology acquisition and sustainment of the service’s weapon system. Wolfenbarger takes over for retiring General Donald Hoffman, who served for 42 years. Wolfenbarger joined the Air Force in 1980, after graduation from the Air Force Academy. That was the first class to include women. She’s held a number of assignments at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base during her career, and in 2009, Wolfenbarger went from major general to lieutenant general in less than six months. Wolfenbarger will now oversee a staff of 81,000 and manage a budget of about $60 billion. She’s the second female four star general in the military. Army general Ann Dunwoody earned the rank in 2008. |
