Crime and Courts Wednesday, July 25, 2012 Ohio drug seizures for first half of 2012 have been higher than last year The amount of heroin seized so far this year has been 327 percent higher than in the same period last year Story by STEVE BROWN |

| The Ohio State Highway Patrol says it’s seizing more drugs and making more drug arrests this year. From Ohio public radio station WOSU, Steve Brown reports. |
The patrol says the amount of heroin seized by troopers in the first six months of the year was 327 percent higher than the same period in 2011. Marijuana seizures were up more than 100 percent, and cocaine seizures increased 31 percent.
Law enforcement officials have for months been cracking down on prescription pill abuse, especially in southern Ohio. Those efforts are apparently getting results: the seizure of stimulants, depressants, and hallucinogens all increased more than 40 percent in the first half of 2012, while opiate seizures pumped up four percent.
Drug arrests increased by nearly 1,000 over the first half of 2012. Franklin County led the state with 310 drug arrests. That’s more than double the next-highest county. |
