Environment Friday, November 9, 2012 First Energy revamps existing coal plant New natural gas generation is expected to reduce or extend timeframe of company's deactivation Story by AKILAH PORTER |
| | |
In The Region: First Energy and a collaboration of publically-owned electric companies have signed a preliminary agreement to site, build and operate a natural gas facility within an existing coal plant in Eastlake.
The agreement with American Municipal Power will allow First Energy to meet the Ohio Environmental Protectant Agency’s clean air rules, which had been expected to force them to close.
First Energy spokesman Mark Durbin says the combustion turbines will enhance the reliability of electricity in the region. |
(sound) "It’s expected to reduce or even extend the time frame for some transmission projects that we’ve previously announced to help address any potential reliability concerns up in the northern Ohio region. This power plant will provide ultimately quite few megawatts up there that combine with some of the other transmission projects that we are doing, should ensure that northern Ohio has a nice reliably source of electricity well into the future."
The construction is projected to start in 2014 and will take about 15 to 20 months to complete. Members of American Municipal Power include Cleveland, Amherst, Hudson and Cuyahoga Falls. |
