Crime and Courts Monday, December 3, 2012 Cleveland mayor offers tentative support to police in shooting But Jackson says key questions must be answered by WKSU's KEVIN NIEDERMIER |
 Reporter Kevin Niedermier | | |
In The Region: Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson says he will support the police officers involved in last week’s deadly car chase and shooting if an investigation shows they followed law and policy.
But at a press conference today, he said there will be consequences if they acted outside established procedures for pursuits and deadly force Thursday night. That’s when 13 officers fired nearly 140 shots, killing a man and woman following a high-speed chase. Neither of the two appears to have been armed.
Jackson says he wants the Cleveland Police Department’s administrative review committee to answer specific questions. |
“The supervision of the pursuit, how long the pursuit lasted, the number of officers involved in the pursuit, the number of officers involved in the final incident and whether or not proper tactics were used that could have prevented the use of deadly force in this incident.”
Police say the two, Timothy Russell of Cleveland and Malissa Williams of East Cleveland, were in a car near the Cleveland Justice Center when they heard a shot. They also claim Russell rammed a cruiser and tried to his an officer before he was shot in East Cleveland. The families of both victims have hired attorneys. |
