Environment Wednesday, January 2, 2013 Records show Cleveland had it's warmest year in 2012 Temperatures were unusually high last year for many places across the country by WKSU's OZIE IKUENOBE | Reporter Ozie Ikuenobe | | |
| National Weather Service records show that last year in Cleveland was the hottest on record.
The average temperature was 54.1 degrees. The previous record was 53.6 in 1998. Before that, the old record had held for 67 years. Scott Sheridan, a geography professor at Kent State University, says record high temperatures in 2012 were common across the country and not limited to northeast Ohio. |

“The overall reason 2012 ended up being so warm is that we had several periods that were just very well above normal in terms of how unusual they were, but we didn’t have any correspondingly cold periods to compensate for that. And so the end result was just a very warm year.”
Sheridan does not think 2013 will be warmer than last year. But he says long-term trends show temperatures are likely to keep climbing. |
