Search continues for missing 12-year-old
Nic Shaffer was swept away in Mud Brook last night
Story by LYNDSEY SCHLEY

In The Region:
Akron firefighters are still searching for 12-year -old boy who was swept away in Mud Brook yesterday.

Akron Deputy Fire Chief Dale Evans says teams resumed their search for Nic Shaffer, who has autism, this morning. Evans says the high-water that swept away the boy also makes recovery efforts difficult.

“We’re still dealing with some high-water environment, which is difficult and hazardous. So we’re being very careful to operate in there and still be as thorough as we can.”

Evans says crews have had some assistance from helicopters, but have mostly used ground and boat groups from around the county to find the boy.

Police said Shaffer was sitting on a retaining wall with his mother when he fell or jumped in. Mud Brook is usually a small creek but was turned into a rushing waterway by the rain.
