Akron-based FirstEnergy must replace a transformer at its Beaver Valley Nuclear Power Station in western Pennsylvania due its unexpected shutdown Jan. 6.

The cause of the shutdown has not been determined. Jennifer Young with FirstEnergy says the company is performing a thorough investigation over the next several weeks. Young says the shutdown of any one plant does not impact customer’s ability to receive power.

“The Beaver Valley Plant doesn’t necessarily serve people in that community. There’s a lot of different generating sources offered across the grid. All of those go out on the grid and then the load is distributed to serve customers as required.”

Young would not say how long installation will take or how much it will cost.

FirstEnergy also operates both of Ohio’s commercial nuclear reactors, Davis-Besse and Perry.
