Portage County jail deals with overcrowding troubles
Sheriff says it's been a problem since 2011

Portage County Sheriff David Doak will meet with county common pleas judges today to discuss the issue of overcrowding in the county jail, specifically among women.
The jail currently houses 72 women, but it’s only allocated space for 34. Doak attributes a lack of funding to the housing problem. |

“Space has become an issue," said Doak. "We are constantly trying to move people around in the facility to accommodate those kinds of numbers. One thing kinda’ snowballs into another, but it gets down to dollars and cents.”
The Portage County jail had a levy on last November’s ballot which would have given the jail $1.2 million to assist with overcrowding. Voters did not pass the levy. |
