Lakewood Council Approves Closing the City's Hospital

Lakewood City Council gave its approval last night for the city to close Lakewood Hospital and turn the century-old facility into a family health clinic and emergency room. WKSU’s Kevin Niedermier has this report on the contentious decision.


The Cleveland Clinic and University Hospitals are based within a few blocks of each other on Euclid Avenue on Cleveland’s east side. But they’ve been increasingly opening offices to the south, including in Akron, a city where Summa has traditionally been dominant. WKSU’s Kabir Bhatia reports on how Summa and others can stay competitive in the face of increased consolidation.

Lakewood city officials and the Cleveland Clinic have agreed on a deal to close Lakewood Hospital and replace it with a family health center.  The Cleveland Clinic, which runs the in-patient facility, says the in-patient hospital cannot keep operating because it loses millions of dollars each month. But as WKSU’s Kevin Niedermier reports, the effort to keep it open will not end.
