With another government shutdown looming this week, Senate Democrats, including Ohio Senator Sherrod Brown, are still hoping to strike a deal on protections for the undocumented immigrants known as "Dreamers." But at a news conference Monday, Brown suggested that failure to reach an agreement on the issue is "unlikely" to result in another shutdown.

Federal employees around Ohio face uncertainty today as a government shutdown enters its third day.

Senate Democrats continue to press for a bill to address the fate of Dreamers, young undocumented immigrants brought to the U.S. illegally as children. It's a political gamble that could hurt Democrats in the midterm elections, especially in states like Ohio, which went for President Trump and his tough stance on illegal immigration.

Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, up for re-election this fall, said there's more at stake for him than the Dreamers.

Education groups are expected to hit Washington this week to lobby Congress to provide legal status for so-called Dreamers – the now young adults without documents who arrived in the U.S. as small children. Among those they’re hoping to sway is Ohio’s GOP Sen. Rob Portman. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze reports he’s open to the idea.
