Akron Has its First Health Equity Ambassador

The City of Akron has appointed its first Health Equity Ambassador to help decrease racial and ethnic health disparities.  Mayor Dan Horrigan has appointed Tamiyka Rose to the position. The mayor’s chief of staff, James Hardy says Rose will first focus on lowering the high infant mortality rate in the city’s African-American community.  Hardy says her job will be coordinating the many existing programs now working on the issue.

With opioid overdose deaths rising nationwide, Ohio Sen. Sherrod Brown has introduced a bill he says would provide a comprehensive approach to addiction. 

Brown says the bill covers heroin and other opioid addictions from crisis through recovery by increasing access to treatment and boosting proven prevention efforts like early education for children.

Obesity is an enormous problem in the United States and the impact is not only on our health. More than two-thirds of Americans are overweight. More than a third are obese. And the economic cost is staggering.

In the final installment of WKSU’s The Business of Health, Vivian Goodman reports that Ohio, with the 8th highest rate among the states, has a lot to lose if the obesity epidemic rages on.
