Ohio’s U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown has stirred up controversy by labeling President Trump’s adviser Steve Bannon a racist, and saying another adviser may be one as well. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze has more.

Brown was on CNN’s State of the Union program Sunday, when host Dana Bash asked if he agreed with Congresswoman Frederica Wilson that the Trump White House is full of racists. He responded:

“I agree that Steve Bannon is a white supremacist and Steven Miller seems to be and I know that studies have shown that they have their allies sprinkled around the White House.”

The Cleveland police union Tuesday endorsed state Treasurer Josh Mandel – a Republican -- in his bid for U.S. Senate.

The union hall was devoid of any members when its president, Steve Loomis, announced the Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association leadership had voted to endorse Mandel over incumbent Sen. Sherrod Brown.  Loomis said Brown is “stale” and does not support law enforcement.

All eyes are going to be on Ohio next year for what could be one of the biggest U.S. Senate races in the country. And it looks like it might be a rematch between incumbent Democrat Sherrod Brown and Republican challenger Josh Mandel. Rematches are rare but not unheard of.

In the history of U.S. Senate races nationwide, there have only been 46 times when the same two candidates went head-to-head in two consecutive elections.

A contender for U.S. Senate is raising the stakes by hiring some big players in statewide and national politics.

Republican investment banker Mike Gibbons hired the digital team that helped Donald Trump’s presidential run. And he hired Chris Schrimpf, a former spokesperson for the White House campaign of John Kasich, a Trump critic. Schrimpf says this shows Gibbons is serious.
