Four Democratic candidates for Ohio governor largely avoided criticizing one another in Monday night’s City Club of Cleveland debate, focusing their condemnation instead on Republican state leadership.

Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley, former U.S. Rep. Betty Sutton, State Sen. Joe Schiavoni and former State Rep. Connie Pillich discussed opioids, healthcare and education during the hour-long event at the Idea Center at Playhouse Square.

On the same day the proposed two-year state budget was passed, the state legislature also passed a $581 million budget for the Bureau of Worker’s Compensation. But the BWC budget didn’t include controversial language that would have barred coverage of undocumented workers.

Federal stats show nearly 14,000 jobs at call centers in Ohio have been lost in the last decade. Senate Democrats have proposed a bill that seeks to protect the 170,000 people still working at call centers in the state.
