The University of Akron introduced its new basketball coach today. John Groce comes to Akron after spending the past decade at Ohio University and Illinois, where he notched a combined four NCAA tournament wins.

WKSU sports commentator Terry Pluto says Groce will be a good fit in Akron, since he’s had some success in the Mid-American Conference, and he knows the Midwest.

The Mid-American Conference basketball tournament is underway. The men's and women's teams that win the MAC tournament at the Q in Cleveland on Saturday get automatic bids to the NCAA tournament.

WKSU commentator Terry Pluto says Akron's men's team is the clear favorite, seeded No. 1 overall, while Kent State's women's team is on the rise.

An open forum on immigration drew an audience of about 200 Friday at the University of Akron.

University President Matt Wilson says he put the forum together to give people with questions about President Donald Trump’s immigration policy a way to get accurate answers.

The University of Akron is responding to President Trump’s executive order temporarily banning refugees from all countries, and all residents from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

University President Matthew Wilson says about 85 students enrolled at the university come from the seven countries listed in the executive order. According to Wilson, two Iranian graduate students at the university had their student visa applications suspended last week.

The president of the University of Akron says the school he took over six months ago is starting to see a recovery in finances, enrollment and graduation rates. WKSU’s M.L. Schultze spoke with Matt Wilson after he outlined to the Akron Press Club today what the university is doing to recover from a tumultuous two years.
